What We Do

Academic Exchange

Focusing on innovation-driven development, the CMS has built a high-quality platform and formed a tiered and categorized academic exchange service system, promoting meteorological science and technology innovation and transformation. Nearly 50 large-scale academic exchange activities are organized annually.

Science Outreach

To improve the scientific literacy of the public, the CMS, recognized as one of the outstanding societies by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), continuously strengthens the meteorological science outreach system and capacity building, innovates forms of science outreach, and enhances branded activities.

Think Tank and Decision-Making Consultation

To support the scientific decision-making of the government, the CMS leverages its unique third-party advantages to establish and strengthen an industry think tank team. We are committed to advancing the development of think tank systems and conducting comprehensive science and technology consultation, evaluation, and assessment.

Awards, Talent Recommendation, and Project Recommendation

The CMS supports the growth and needs of meteorologists, experts and talents by leveraging the advantages of the meteorology enterprise and organizing various awards and recommendations.

Publication

Acta Meteorologica Sinica (ACTA) was first published in 1925 and its English Edition in 1987 [renamed as Journal of Meteorological Research (JMR) in 2014]. ACTA enjoys a prestigious reputation within the atmospheric science community both domestically and internationally. Renowned meteorologists such as TU Changwang, ZHAO Jiuzhang, and YE Duzheng once served as editors-in-chief of the journal. Both ACTA and JMR are dedicated to addressing national development needs and focuses on publishing significant research achievements. The journals promptly publish innovative research outcomes that represent leading levels in atmospheric sciences and related disciplines, covering wide research areas such as global climate change, numerical modeling, monsoons, the Tibetan Plateau meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, and more.

ACTA and JMR are indexed in databases such as CJCR/CSTPCD, CSCD, Peking University Core Journals, SCI(E), and others, consistently ranking at the top in various evaluations of Chinese atmospheric science journals. ACTA has received multiple national-level journal awards. In 2023, JMR was listed in Q2 of JCR with an SCI impact factor of 3.2, and in Q1 of SCOPUS with a CiteScore of 6.2. In 2020, JMR was selected as a “Core Journal of Science and Technology” by CJCR.

Collaboration and Exchange

The CMS has made steady progress in exchanges and cooperation with meteorological communities, including the American Meteorological Society (AMS), European Meteorological Society (EMS), Meteorological Society of Japan (MSJ), and so on. The CMS has successfully organized international meetings such as the 4th Asian Conference on Meteorology and the China–Central Asia Meteorological Cooperation Forum. The year of 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Meteorological Society. A series of commemorative activities were held, during which multiple foreign experts and scholars were invited to attend the Centennial Celebration and deliver speeches. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the CMS and AMS.

Efforts have also been made to promote meteorological science and technology exchanges across the Taiwan Strait, including organizing the Cross-Strait Meteorological Forum for People’s Livelihood, the Cross-Strait Young Scientists Forum, and so on.
